GOLDEN SPIKE CEREMONY BARREMIAN GSSP - November 9, 2024

The golden spike ceremony for the BARREMIAN Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) was held on November 9, 2024 in Rio Argos (Caravaca de la Cruz), Southest Spain.

The GSSP that defines the base of the BARREMIAN Stage was ratified by IUGS in March 2023 (Company et al. 2024)

The ceremony was organized by Miguel Company (chair of the Barremian Working Group) and the Town Hall of Caravaca de la Cruz. Carlos Díaz and Luis Arrufat played an active role in the organization of the ceremony.

Ian Jarvis, Francesca Falzoni, Zofia Dubicka, Dangpeng Xi (respectively chair, vice chair, secretary and member of the International Subcommission on Cretaceous Stratigraphy), Elisabetta Erba (chair of the international Commission on Stratigraphy ICS), and Maria Rose Petrizzo (vice president of the International Union of Geological Sciences IUGS) attended the ceremony.

The dedication ceremony was coordinated by Ana Belén Martínez (Deputy Mayor and Councilor for the Environment of the Caravaca City Council), and attended by José Francisco García (Mayor of Caravaca), Patricio Sánchez (General Director of Cultural Heritage of the Region of Murcia), and José Santiago Villa (Deputy mayor and Councilor for Tourism of the Caravaca City Council).
